Detail information about job Research Fellow. Terms and conditions vacancy

Duration: Fixed-term until 30 June 2019

A Research Fellow position is available from October 2017 for a project on the flow, mixing and scale-up of formulated liquids and soft solids within the School of Chemical Engineering, University of Birmingham. The position is funded by the National Formulation Centre (NFC, at CPI) and also involves the Universities of Leeds (Prof. Elaine Martin) and Edinburgh (Prof. Wilson Poon).

The National Formulation Centre in collaboration with the three Universities has designed a fluid mixing rig that consists of a series of stirred vessels at different scales, together with a series of online monitoring and control systems. The rig will eventually be based at the NFC in Sedgefield, but will be commissioned and characterised at Birmingham. The two-year project will involve a series of scale up trials for formulations of increasing complexity, together with experiments involving well-characterised systems developed by Edinburgh, and tests of a series of measurement systems and control strategies, led by Leeds. The rig will also be used to study a number of industrial mixing/scale up problems, in collaboration with CPI and others.

We seek an experienced chemical or mechanical engineer, or similar, to plan, carry out, and interpret experiments on a variety of fluid systems and measurement methods. The successful candidate will interact closely with the academic and industrial partners – within the School the links will be to Prof Peter Fryer, Prof Mark Simmons and Dr Federico Alberini, as well as to CPI staff based in Birmingham (Dr Katharina Roettger)

The ideal candidate will have completed, or be near completion of a Doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering or related subject area. Previous research experience in engineering, fluid mixing or physical sciences is desirable. The successful candidate should have good communication and team working skills and the ability to write clearly and succinctly.

Applicants should complete an online application form, available from the website through the link shown below, where they should also provide an up-to-date CV, a letter of motivation, and the names of two scientific referees.

Informal enquiries can be directed to Prof. Peter Fryer via email: [email protected].
