Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and motivated Bioinformatician to join the Organisms and Ecosystems Group at the Earlham Institute.

Background:

The Organisms and Ecosystems Group produces and integrates phenomic and genomic data in order to identify and exploit genetic diversity to improve traits of agronomic interest in plants. We assess the diversity of crop populations, and identify the key regulators of complex agronomic traits. Through understanding genetic differences in individuals from the same or closely-related species, we can identify the genetic information that is most pertinent to plant breeding. In short, we try to help feed a changing world.

The Role:

The post-holder will deliver top-class bioinformatics research closely collaborating with breeders in developing countries to contribute to the global development goals.

The main duties of the role include designing and implementing a genome-wise association analysis of a rice subpopulation from East Asia. The post-holder will also compare and validate genomic diversity pipelines (SNP/SNV calling) for genotype collections with different levels of ploidy and sequencing coverages. They will participate in the design and testing of cost efficient genotyping approaches for complex genomes, such as Pool-seq and skimmed sequencing.

The role will also involve supporting the project management team to work effectively with international collaborators, and providing training to rice breeders in marker assisted selection (MAS).

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will be educated to MSc level, or equivalent, in a scientific field. They will possess bioinformatics skills and have a practical understanding of sequencing, phenomic data handling and NGS techniques and workflows. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to travel overseas to meet with international collaborators.

Additional information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £31,250 to £38,100 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This post is for a contract of 12 months.
