Do you have a diplomatic and customer orientated approach with experience of managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders? If so, you could gain valuable experience as an International Liaison Officer at the Chevening Secretariat.
Chevening is the global scholarship programme of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). Established in 1983, each year Chevening Scholarships support Master’s-level study at UK universities for about 1700 individuals, who come to the UK from most regions of the world (excluding the United States of America and the European Union).
Funded by the FCO, the programme is administered by the Chevening Secretariat, hosted by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
International Liaison Officers (ILOs) sit within the International Team and are the designated contact point for a portfolio of British Embassies/High Commissions (Posts) within a specific region or regions. The key aspect of the ILO role is to build and manage relationships with British Embassies/High Commissions overseas.
As an International Liaison Officer, your responsibilities will include:

- Providing administrative support to Reading Committees who assess the applications, including playing an active role in the training of committee members
- Responding to enquiries from applicants in conjunction with International Assistants
- Working across the functional areas of the Secretariat to provide support on a range of activities including: marketing, pre-departure briefings, partnership development and alumni engagement activities. This will often include travelling to posts in country and giving presentations to various stakeholders including staff, scholars, alumni and applicants
- Supporting Posts with maintaining existing partnerships and cultivating new local partnerships
- Supporting British Embassies/High Commissions to deliver enhanced alumni engagement overseas, following strategic alumni engagement objectives set out by the FCO
- A number of other administrative tasks including updating databases, updating the online application system and website copy, and other related tasks
Some of the knowledge and skills you need to be able to demonstrate include:
- A customer-orientated and diplomatic approach as well as a professional attitude in dealing with British Embassies/High Commissions, even in potentially stressful situations
- Experience of relationship management and working with administrative processes and procedures
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to build, maintain and strengthen relationships
- Significant international experience either by working overseas or in an international organisation
- A basic knowledge of the Higher Education system and current student issues
Benefits include 27 days holiday per year plus 4 discretionary days, competitive pension scheme, season ticket loan, childcare vouchers and excellent support for learning and development.
As International Liaison Officer, you will be employed by ACU Trading Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary.
