Based at East Malling in Kent, NIAB EMR is an internationally renowned plant science organisation conducting research on horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment, with particular emphasis on perennial and clonally propagated fruit crops. NIAB EMR became part of The NIAB Group in February 2016. NIAB is the UK’s fastest growing crop science organisation, with rapidly expanding research capabilities in plant genetics, agronomy, farming systems and data science, the largest national field trials capability, and strong research links with industry, Government and academia. Employing more than 300 people across the UK, NIAB provides scientific research, technical services and practical advice to improve the yield, efficiency and resilience of crop production across the arable, forage and horticulture sectors.

NIAB EMR aims to be recognised as the pre-eminent research institution in the UK for strategic and applied research, development and innovation in horticulture. Building on our significant international reputation, we wish to appoint a plant pathologist who will progress our scientific understanding of the ecology of plant pathogens in the natural environment and develop effective means of disease control in horticultural crops. The successful applicant will be expected to have postdoctoral research experience with an ability to draw on a wide range of science disciplines including microbial ecology and understand the application of modern molecular technology in plant pathological research.

The successful candidate will be expected to innovate and actively seek their own research funding, whilst developing collaborative contacts both nationally and internationally. Communication via peer-reviewed publications, at conferences and in talks to the horticulture industry will be essential. 

The appointment is expected to be in Pay Band 6, £28,125 - £32,422 per annum with salary dependent on experience and relevant qualifications.  A higher salary band may be agreed for an exceptional candidate in recognition that the individual brings relevant attributes, experience, knowledge and/or skills that are exceptional and beyond the essential criteria of this post.
