Detail information about job Research Associate. Terms and conditions vacancy

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position in electron cryo-microscopy is available in the research team led by Prof Christiane Berger-Schaffitzel at the University of Bristol. The project is part of a dynamic, interdisciplinary collaboration with the research teams of Prof Ernest Laue at the University of Cambridge and Prof Imre Berger at the University of Bristol.

The research centres on understanding the assembly, structure and function of nuclear remodelling and deacetylase (NuRD) complexes, which play a key role in the early stages of differentiation of embryonic stem cells. We take a multi-disciplinary approach that combines electron cryo-microscopy, mass-spectrometry, X-ray crystallography, single molecule techniques, single-cell genomics methods and functional studies in mouse ES cells. For recent publications, please see: Zhang et al., Journal of Molecular Biology, 2016, 428(14): 2931-42; Stevens et al., Nature, 2017, 544(7648): 59-64.

A central component of our research is the high-resolution structural and biochemical analysis of the interaction of NuRD complexes with nucleosomes by electron cryo-microscopy. You will undertake structural studies using cryo-EM and would be supported by the excellent environment and research facilities at the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge. It is envisaged that you would work at both locations, but be based primarily in Bristol.

Applicants should have a PhD in structural biology (or be due to complete a PhD within the next few months). Expertise in electron cryo-microscopy and image processing would be highly desirable, but experience with high-quality sample purification, protein characterisation and sample optimization, or protein production in insect cells would also be a plus.

The post is for 3 years initially with a possibility for extension. We are seeking to fill the post as soon as possible.

The Research Associate will benefit from the cutting-edge Bristol Biosuite for structural biology and the Synthetic Biology centre (BrisSynbio, www.bristol.ac.uk/brissynbio/), our new state-of-the-art Cryo-EM facility (Talos Arctica, with Energy Filter and DED), and access to Cryo-EM facilities and expertise at the University of Cambridge (Talos Arctica and Titan Krios).

For informal enquiries please contact: Professor Christiane Schaffitzel, +44 117 39 41869, [email protected] or Professor Imre Berger, +44 117 39 41857

The closing date for applications is midnight on Monday 25 September 2017.

The University is committed to creating and sustaining a fully inclusive culture. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and communities.
