15 months Short Term Appointment

The Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences (www.ceh.ac.uk).  Research is carried out by 350 scientists at four sites in the UK.

CEH undertakes national land cover and crop mapping for the UK using satellite imagery (Land Cover Maps 2000, 2007 and 2015 and Land Cover Plus Crops 2015 onwards in partnership with RSAC Ltd).  Such products support science delivery in CEH and beyond, including commercial applications where appropriate.  An opportunity now exists for a GIS Spatial Modeller to work with CEH’s spatial ecologists and statisticians to research and develop new value added information products based on the Land Cover and Crops Map series.

Main Duties:

  • Implementation of spatial analyses to develop a suite of innovative value added spatial information products, associated with the UK Crops Map and UK Land Cover Map and other large-scale spatial datasets
  • Development of tools for analysing ecological aspects of planning large-scale infrastructure
  • Support spatial product launches through provision of data layers, maps and reports
  • Resolving licensees’ technical queries
  • Quality assurance for annual UK Crop Map production.

Skills and Qualifications needed:

  • Advanced GIS skills, including ability to develop and apply multi-step spatial analyses combining a range of spatial tools
  • Ability to develop efficient spatial analysis routines via scripting (e.g. in R or Python)
  • Good knowledge of spatial data sources, including earth observation (e.g. SAR, optical data) and citizen science
  • Experience in handling and managing large volumes of data
  • An active interest in spatial ecology
  • Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant subject area.
