Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Deltaic Flood Risk. Terms and conditions vacancy

Faculty/Area: Research and Enterprise

Fixed Term for 36 months

A great opportunity has arisen for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Deltaic Flood Risk.

You will join a highly successful research grouping in geosciences working on a new NERC research project (funded through the Newton Fund). You will work as part of an interdisciplinary team under the direction of Project Principal Investigator Professor Daniel Parsons, integrating with the wider research environment with the School of Environmental Sciences at Hull. The overall aim of the project is to deliver new insight into the trade-offs between flooding, sediment delivery, and rice cultivation and associated livelihood strategies in the Vietnamese Mekong delta (VMD). You will work as part of a large multi-institutional international team and will focus on quantification of water and sediment fluxes across the delta. You will also be involved with hydrological and morphodynamic modelling components of the work and interface with others focusing on the social science aspects of the wider project. You will contribute to project meetings, attend conferences and be encouraged to produce high-impact publications.

You will have a PhD in a Geoscience, Engineering or a related discipline and will have an established or developing research profile, including publications and appropriate project management experience. Experience of quantification of flow or sediment transport, morphodynamic modelling and/or data analysis and visualisation within high-level codes (such as Matlab, and/or GIS) would be advantageous.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post.

The post holder will lead field campaigns within the Vietnamese Mekong delta (VMD), including obtaining hydrographic and sedimentation data. These data will underpin a range of modelling and scenario testing within the wider project grouping and, as such, the post-holder will need to work effectively and interface as part of this large interdisciplinary team. The post holder will have a strong background in one or all of the following areas: flooding, sediment transport and sedimentation processes, and morphodynamics. You will also have relevant methodological expertise in field based survey work and/or numerical modelling of these processes. A strong technical background in executing field experiments and data collection is essential. The applicant must also have excellent scientific communication, presentation and writing skills, as well as very good critical and analytical problem-solving skills.

In your covering letter please refer directly to the criteria, given in the person specification attached. Applications are assessed by the selection panel according to these criteria.

To discuss this role informally, please contact Prof. Dan Parsons 01482 465343, [email protected].
