Fixed term appointment up to 32 months, available from 1 October 2017
Applications are invited for a full-time post funded by a CRUK Multidisciplinary Project Award led by Dr Chris Dunsby at Imperial College London and Dr Chris Bakal at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The project will be carried out in collaboration with Dr Erik Sahai’s Lab at the Francis Crick Institute. The aim of this project is to develop and apply a unique single-objective light sheet microscopy system – an oblique plane microscope – to study the ability of cancer cells to metastasise, which is a key step in the progression of cancer.
The main duties of this post include the design, construction, testing and application of optical systems for light sheet fluorescence microscopy. The post will also involve developing and applying software to control automated imaging, including time-lapse 3D imaging in multiwell plates, and to achieve automated 3D image analysis and quantification of large time-lapse 3D datasets. The post will also involve working closely with collaborators at the ICR and Crick to develop sample preparation strategies and to image samples.
You must have a degree (or equivalent) in physics, engineering or similar and a PhD or equivalent experience in optical science including fluorescence imaging and software development for signal/image processing. Significant experience of the design, construction and testing of fluorescence imaging systems and their application to the study of biological samples. Proficiency in the alignment of complex optical imaging systems and in development of software for computer control of experiments and for 3D image processing and analysis is also essential, as well as experience of LabVIEW and MATLAB. Knowledge of 3D fluorescence imaging techniques such as confocal and light sheet microscopy is also essential. Experience of light sheet fluorescence microscopy, optical design software such as ZEMAX and working with single mode optical fibres and knowledge of image segmentation approaches and image processing algorithms and procedures are highly desirable. Experience of Java and/or C/C++ is also highly desirable.
