Purpose and Main DutiesA vacancy has arisen for an Associate Lecturer to teach and act as acting Programme Director on the MSc Psychodynamics of Human Development and Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, run in collaboration with the British Psychotherapy Foundation.The successful candidate will have a well-developed knowledge of psychoanalytic or psychodynamic theory along with a good understanding of psychosocial approaches, qualitative methodologies and an ability to teach this knowledge and skills to adults.Candidate Requirements

The minimum requirements for selection are:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of qualitative research methods.
  • Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of psychoanalytic/psychodynamic theory.
  • Education to at least Master’s level.
  • Experience of teaching psychodynamic theory.
  • Experience of teaching qualitative research methods.
  • Interest in the organizational and psychosocial context in which counselling/ psychotherapy takes place.
  • A good understanding of the needs of adult learners, and to be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage interest and enthusiasm.
  • Experience and willingness to develop a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.
  • Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
  • A working knowledge of IT and experience of/willingness to use a virtual learning environment.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate.
  • Willingness to engage in reflective practice.
Programme Director DutiesMSc: teach qualitative and psychosocial research methods, supervise dissertations and support the ethics submission process, allocate supervisors, attend 3 study days per year and liaise with the BPF Course Director for all relevant course matters. Contribute to the assessment process, mark dissertations and deal with deferrals, extensions, and Break in Study requests. Contribute to and chair the exam board and JST meetings, and liaise with the Departments AD as appropriate. Attend course management and student/staff meetings (1-2 per term), open days and staff development days.Doctorate: attend one management meeting per term, deal with BiS requests. Liaise with the Departments AD as appropriate. Independent Research Module classes for the MSc Psychodynamics of Human Development
  • Read weekly set readings and prepare seminar activity on the basis of the guidance offered by the weekly lecturer
  • Attend weekly evening lectures in term 1 (11 weeks) followed by running a seminar group
  • Attend and possibly run dissertation workshops in terms 2-3.

Further Information

For the Programme Director duties the rate will be the starting point of grade 7 but at the plain rate (not including duties relating to teaching multiplier) of £23.02 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contract hours worked. There will be up to a total of 315 hours i.e. 1.5 days per week on average across the academic year (October 2017 - September 2018). The role is a flexible arrangement, taking place in part remotely with the exception of any teaching or meetings with staff and students which will take place at Birkbeck or the BPF, normally on Wednesdays or Thursday evenings.For teaching duties on the Independent Research Module the rate will be the starting point of grade 7 which is £57.55 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contract hours worked. The hourly rate is dependent upon length of service with the College. This rate is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
