Detail information about job Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Applied Mathematics. Terms and conditions vacancy

The University of Adelaide is one of Australia's leading Group of Eight, research-intensive universities and is consistently ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world. Established in 1874, it is Australia's third oldest university with a strong reputation for preparing educated leaders and delivering research outcomes that contribute to local, national and global wellbeing.

The Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences offers an intellectually exciting and innovative environment in which to work, with seven Schools, including:

The School of Mathematical Sciences which provides an intellectual environment, developing students with skills in high level mathematics. The school provided specific degrees in mathematical sciences and computer sciences with specialisations in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics.

The Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers in transdisciplinary research to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges.

Trajan Scientific and Medical (Trajan) is a global partner to the mass spectrometry manufacturing industry and the University’s partner and owner of the research problem which is focused on the development of novel glass components to improve the sensitivity of electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry.

This position is funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project with industry partner Trajan Scientific and Medical. The successful applicant will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers in the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing, developing new glass components to enhance the sensitivity of electrospray ionization mass spectrometry.  S/he will work with Assoc. Prof. Yvonne Stokes, School of Mathematical Sciences, to provide mathematical modelling expertise for this project, and will also collaborate with the other team members. The project aims to advance fabrication of glass capillaries and tubes with complex and high precision structures to enable both multiplexing ion generation from a single capillary and geometrical matching the shape of the bore of the tube collecting the emitted ion plume. Mass spectrometry has become an indispensible analytical tool for proteomics and synthetic chemistry and thus the significant enhancement of mass spectrometry sensitivity in this project will accelerate progress in disease research, biomarker discovery and drug development.

Salary: (Level A, with PhD) $83,307–$89,425 per annum.

Superannuation: An employer contribution of 17% may apply.

Term of position: This fixed-term contract is available immediately for a period of 2 years.

To be successful you should have:

  • A PhD in Applied Mathematics or another relevant discipline;
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high-quality research in theoretical fluid mechanics;
  • Demonstrated experience in numerical solution of differential equations, including the development of computer programs;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.

Please upload your curriculum vitae, including the names and contact details of 3 referees, and address the selection criteria within the online application. If you have any queries regarding this position, please contact Assoc. Prof. Yvonne Stokes, email: [email protected]

Closing date: 22 September 2017

The University of Adelaide is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer. Women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who meet the requirements of this position are strongly encouraged to apply
