Detail information about job Research Assistant. Terms and conditions vacancy

Applications are invited for a Research Assistant to join the laboratory of Professor Steven Penfield at the John Innes Centre.

Background:

This role is based within a dynamic and growing interdisciplinary group of around 15 researchers exploring the effects of temperature on flowering time, seed development and seed dormancy and vigour. The work spans from model systems to applied strategic crop science. Modern molecular genetics and genomic tools are used to understand important processes such as vernalisation, control of flowering, crop scheduling, canopy development and seed biology.

The Role:

We are seeking a research assistant to work on a project which aims to understand the control of seed vigour in rice, funded by the Global Challenges Research Fund.

The post-holder will work to phenotype seed germination rates in a large collection of rice landraces, using the latest automated image capture techniques, in collaboration with colleagues at Rothamsted Research and the International Rice Research Institute in the Philippines. The work will involve curating and managing the germination experiments, plus data analysis and communication with external collaborators.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate will be educated to BSc level, or equivalent, in biological sciences. They will possess a good understanding of statistics and a demonstrated ability to perform research as well as experience in experiment design.

Additional Information:

Salary on appointment will be within the range £24,300 to £29,750 per annum depending on qualifications and experience.  This is a part time post (18.5 hours per week) for a period of one year.
