The School of Arts at the University of Bristol supports five successful and dynamic departments: Music, Film, Theatre, Anthropology and Archaeology, and Philosophy; with student support and executive administration for the School based at 43 Woodland Road.

The School of Arts is looking for a Theatre Technician to support teaching and learning in the Department of Theatre. The Theatre Technician will assist with the running and maintenance of the theatres on a day to day basis and take specific responsibility for managing and maintaining theatre resources. It is essential that you have three years' relevant experience of working in theatres or other live performance environment, together with the technical experience detailed in the job description.

You will have strong time management skills, the duties that you will perform during a working day are often unsupervised. Although you will be advised by, and work closely with the Teaching Fellow for Theatre: helping to set up for lectures, seminars and performances, ensuring spaces are tidy, safe and fit for purpose and taking responsibility for the lighting, AV and prop stores, for the sound room and for the first-line maintenance of equipment.

You will also assist with the supervision of students and staff in the safe use of equipment, rigging and installation, and will be asked to provide technical ‘show cover’ for theatre performances and other public events (for example, open days and public lectures).

The Department has around 200 students who, as part of their degree, will be expected to make practical theatre pieces as individuals or in groups. You will be closely involved in many of these projects assisting students with all aspects of the technical realisation including set design, rigging, sound and AV.

The post is primarily based in the Department of Theatre, Cantocks Close, Bristol, BS8 1UP in the School of Arts and you will be part of the Professional Services technical team reporting to the Resource Managers. The role is part time: 21 hours worked over 3 days including some evening and weekend work with due notice. There is also a need to support external companies booking the theatre which will necessitate working additional hours.
