The Post

Scottish Funding Council (SFC) funding is now available to support a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional collaborative approach to address gaps identified in the National Research Framework for problem drug use and improve knowledge exchange with practitioners and policy agencies (SFC, 2016). We are now seeking an experienced and motivated Research Coordinator to support the work of the Drugs Research Network Scotland. It is funded for three years and hosted by the Centre of Addiction Services and Research, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Stirling. This post is a unique opportunity to develop and build a sustainable, collaborative research network. Research management experience is required and knowledge or involvement in the drug and alcohol dependence, drug policy and health service research are highly desirable. A minimum of Masters or MRes level degree is essential as is the ability to communicate confidently and effectively through all communication systems, excellent planning and organisational skills and a particular eye for detail.

The Coordinator will scope, develop and facilitate collaborative working in research funding applications across this new Network. The role involves wide interaction with colleagues across the Network and its respective collaborating partners to deliver the DRNS goals. The role will have a visible presence within the drugs research community and act as an important conduit/point of contact between researchers, the wider research environment, and statutory and third sector organisations in the addictions field. Working closely with the Steering Committee (SC) of the DRNS, the role plays a key part in developing and maintaining excellent relationships between the Network and funding agencies.

Description of Duties

The network is required to deliver on a number of Key Performance Indicators relating to the development of high impact research but also in terms of improved information exchange. The role-holder will be expected to keep abreast of research developments in order to ensure the development of the DRNS’s research activities is guided by strategic, as well as scientific, expertise and judgment.

The postholder will be expected to:

  • Facilitate and contribute to the development of high quality grant applications for a range of national and international funding sources.
  • Liaise with a wide range of DRNS stakeholders, as appropriate, to ensure they are aware of funding and dissemination opportunities.
  • Pro-actively network widely within and outwith the DRNS to identify collaborative research opportunities and develop research objectives, including linking DRNS members with potential UK and international collaborators.
  • Be highly visible and available to provide advice and support for researchers, academics and affiliated organisations.
  • Organise and support all DRNS Steering Committee meetings.
  • Attend and contribute to Theme Group and Working Task Group meetings.
  • Ensure the meaningful involvement of the wide range of Network partners/key roles.
  • Support a number of knowledge exchange activities including.
  • Write or contribute to publications or disseminate research findings using other appropriate media such as blogs and collaborative opinion/expert analyses.
  • Make presentations at conferences and other related research and knowledge exchange events.
  • Oversee the development of a website and a communication system for the DRNS (potentially in collaboration with other providers).
