Purpose and Main DutiesFrom time-to-time over the academic year (October through June), opportunities will arise for postgraduate students to participate in activities supporting teaching in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Birkbeck. Usually these opportunities are to assist the session leader in instructing the students (i.e. demonstrating). Whatever the tasks involved, the module organiser concerned will provide relevant training/explanation.
Academic Term Autumn and/or Spring Term
Dates: Monday to Thursday evenings from 6.00pm pm week starting 2nd October 2017.
Number of sessions: depending on the module between 11 and 22 weeks.
Number of hours per session: 2 or 3 hours per session.
Remuneration for demonstrators: just over £20 per hour of contact time.

Salary: Grade 6 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is starting rate £20.18 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay) for contact hours worked.
The salary quoted above is based on an hourly rate dependent upon length of service with the College. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation; administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. The College’s London Pay Scale includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the Greater London area. This appointment is subject to a probationary period of 18 months.
