This position is funded from a Diabetes UK RD Lawrence Fellowship awarded to Dr Emma Vincent: “The impact of cancer on people living with type 2 diabetes”. The aim of the fellowship is to investigate why people living with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are more likely to get and die from cancer. The main focus of the fellowship is the abnormal levels of circulating hormones and metabolites present in people with T2D and how this systemic exposure of cells and tissues to an abnormal and unregulated metabolic environment impacts on cancer incidence and progression.
This project is intended to address which cancers develop as a result of the metabolic environment characteristic of T2D and how they do so. The fellowship bridges two disciplines to address this question. Genetic epidemiology and in particular Mendelian randomization will be used to determine which metabolic traits characteristic of T2D are causal for site-specific cancer. How these traits alter the metabolic activity and phenotype of tumour cells will be determined using laboratory based methods. The ultimate aim being to reveal more relevant approaches for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer in people with T2D.
We are seeking to appoint a talented Research Associate with experience in both the fields of genetic epidemiology and cancer cell biology. We are looking for an individual with a keen interest in metabolic dysregulation and cancer research. The successful applicant with work across both disciplines of genetic epidemiology and cancer cell biology, using Mendelian randomization studies to guide laboratory experiments to elucidate the mechanisms underlying causal associations. As such the successful application will work across two schools (Social and Community Medicine and Cellular and Molecular Medicine) within two faculties (Health Sciences and Biomedical Sciences). The successful applicant will work closely with Dr Emma Vincent (the holder of the fellowship and line manager) in addition to a co-supervisory team of Prof Nicholas Timpson on the epidemiological aspects and Prof Ann Williams on the cancer cell biology aspects.
