St John’s Institute of Dermatology, within Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and King’s College London is the largest dermatology unit in the UK with nationally and internationally recognised research and clinical expertise in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of skin disease.  The clinical research group consists of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, research nurses, scientists and administrative support housed in the heart of clinical dermatology facilities, and designs, conducts and manages commercial and non-commercial clinical research with specific focus on eczema, psoriasis and other inflammatory skin diseases. 

The Clinical Trial Coordinator (CTC) or Research Nurse (RN), depending on professional background, will provide support for the Research Programme of the Unit for Population-Based Dermatology Research, Department of Paediatric Dermatology. The Unit is directed by Dr Carsten Flohr, Consultant, Reader, and Research & Development Lead for St John’s Institute.

Dr Flohr and his team are running a broad portfolio of research studies, including a national trial comparing systemic treatments in severe atopic eczema (TREAT trial: www.treat-trial.org.uk/index.html), a water softener prevention trial which examines the effect of hard versus soft domestic water on skin barrier function (SOFTER) and a trial that tests whether the application of emollients in early life is able to prevent atopic eczema and food allergies downstream (BEEP trial). In addition, Dr Flohr’s team has just won a strategic call from the British Skin Foundation to set up a national atopic eczema biologics registry (A*STAR registry). As we are entering an exciting era of biologics therapy for patients with severe eczema, Dr Flohr’s team is also working with a pharmaceutical company to test one of their new agents. This trial is expected to start recruitment in early 2018.

The CTC/RN will in particular be involved in study recruitment and assessments of the TREAT trial, including tape stripping for the determination of natural moisturising factor content and cytokine profiles in the skin. The CTC/RN may also be involved in aspects of study and data management and will closely work with other members of the Unit for Population-Based Dermatology Research. It is anticipated that they will also work on the biologics study planned to start in early 2018. In addition, they may be asked to support other research projects run within the Research Unit as a CTC/RN, capacity permitting.

As the CTC/RN in the Unit, you will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and independent person with an interest in research. You will be responsible for assisting the Lead Nurse in the development of research protocols, be responsible for maximising patient recruitment, ensure that Research Governance Guidelines and Good Clinical Practice are adhered to and maintain clinical trial study documentation. 

Much of this work will be conducted within GSTT clinics, and you may be expected to work flexible hours to meet set targets.
