Human Connections Group has partnered exclusively with Queenstown Airport for the appointment of a Crew Chief and Deputy Crew Chief to join an established team of firefighters. We invite applications from qualified firefighters who can provide demonstrable evidence and experience in the role of Crew Chief/Deputy at other airports or military fire brigades.

Both Queenstown and Wanaka airports are popular tourism and general aviation hubs, particularly for flightseeing and private jet visits, with Wanaka Airport also offering flight training, private flying, aircraft maintenance, visitor attractions and a global base for NASA scientific balloon launches. The airports contribute significantly to the economic prosperity of New Zealand and the local region. More than 900 people are employed across the airports' communities, with strong links to the communities they serve.

The Job(s)

Rescue Fire positions are an integral part of the operations at Queenstown Airport and as Crew Chief (and Deputy) you can, at times, be involved with all employees in any activity to ensure the safe and effective operation of the Airport, including communications, airfield maintenance, passenger facilitation, public relations and any administrative functions required.

The main aspect of the role(s) is to command and control the rescue and firefighting resources of the Airport including responses to any aircraft accident or incident or special need in accordance to regulations, aviation and company standards.

Additional key responsibilities include providing the necessary leadership to ensure all Rescue Fire personnel and all resources are maintained in a state of readiness in accordance with all aviation regulations, safety standards and the maintenance of discipline by the Rescue Fire Team. Development of personnel and maintenance of performance to the high standards of professional services required.

A major part of both roles is adherence to all H&S regulations and protocol acting as a role model to a “safety first” approach, ensuring there is a full understanding and adherence to the safety policies and procedures along with any and all safe work practices, by all personnel at all times. 

What skills do you need?

  • Previous experience at an airport or military brigades as a Senior Fire Officer or Crew Chief
  • Proven skills in command and control in response to rescue and firefighting incidents
  • Demonstrable leadership skills
  • Current First Aid Certificate PHEC
  • Current and clean NZ Drivers license, including HT license Class 4 (minimum)
  • Current Firearms license
  • People skills and strong communication skills

To be considered for this position you will be required to undertake medical examinations, physical competency tests, security and background checks and group assessments in addition to a robust interview process.
