Nelson, New Zealand

NIWA is a dynamic research organisation whose purpose is to enhance the economic value and sustainable management of New Zealand's aquatic resources and environments, to provide understanding of climate and the atmosphere and increase resilience to weather and climate hazards to improve safety and wellbeing of New Zealanders. NIWA is New Zealand's largest and pre-eminent provider of climate, freshwater and marine science.

NIWA is a leading provider of ecological and fisheries research and consultancy services for the marine resources sector in New Zealand and overseas. The Nelson regional office of NIWA undertakes research and consultancy services in fisheries, marine ecology, aquaculture, and climate/hydrology with a key focus on 'top of the south' environments and issues. The work undertaken is primarily for projects funded by the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Department of Conservation, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the Ministry for the Environment, regional councils, and potentially other clients (e.g., the fishing industry). There is significant scope for building and growing client relationships.

We are currently looking to strengthen our capability in the Nelson team with the addition of four new staff focused on the key areas of marine fisheries population analysis and modelling, marine fisheries science, and marine ecology and aquaculture. We are seeking experienced, mid-career scientists with either previous experience or an interest in leading teams and building new science opportunities.

One of the positions we are seeking to fill is for a quantitative marine fisheries scientist to assist with a range of marine fishery and ecological research. The ideal candidates will have a broad range of quantitative and technical skills to conduct biological and statistical analysis supporting fisheries science and management in New Zealand. This position will join a NIWA-wide team of about 50 fisheries population biology and stock assessment staff.

You will be able to show a proven track record for being a team player with excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong self-motivation and a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of fisheries and/or marine ecological science, a PhD degree (or Masters with equivalent experience), which ideally will include a significant fisheries and/or marine ecological content, and strong organisational, planning and time management skills.

The 14 strong NIWA campus situated in Nelson's port provides a supportive and flexible work atmosphere with access to expertise across every aspect of the marine environment readily available for advice or collaboration at the site or elsewhere within NIWA. NIWA has a convenient location and a flexible family-friendly ethos. Nelson city, the regional centre, has a vibrant arts and cultural life and provides easy access to an outstanding natural environment.
