New Zealand Police has a position available for a proactive and energetic solicitor to join the Lower North and South Legal team, based in Wellington. This is a busy role providing advice to frontline Police officers on a wide range of legal issues.

The work is diverse and interesting, with a focus on providing practical legal advice to officers on matters arising in the course of criminal investigations.  Legal advisors also regularly deal with information law issues and manage civil litigation files. You will therefore need to be an experienced legal advisor, preferably having worked in an in-house legal role or as a litigator. Public sector experience and/or experience working in criminal prosecutions would be a particular advantage.

Your ability to work independently and prioritise work will be important.

The successful applicant will possess a LLB, preferably from a New Zealand University, and a current New Zealand practising certificate (or eligibility to obtain one without undertaking further study).   You will also be required to provide a sample of your legal writing, a copy of your official transcript and undergo a reference and security check prior to an offer of employment being made.

Police values workforce diversity and understands that our people are our most valuable asset. This is a fulltime position. However, Police has a flexible employment options policy in place and would consider candidates seeking flexible employment arrangements for this position.

Skills/Experiences

  • Capable lawyer with experience as either in-house counsel and/or as a litigator.
  • Expertise in providing advice in criminal law, information law and/or civil litigation.
  • Experience in researching and providing high quality oral and written legal advice.
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work independently.

Special Requirements

The successful candidate will possess a LLB, preferably from a New Zealand university and a current practising certificate or the ability to obtain one without further study.
