About the company: 

Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures is a family owned skippered yacht charter tourism business sailing the top of the South Island with bases at Kaiteriteri and Nelson.  Operating since 1997 our main cruising area is the Abel Taman National Park waters. We now offer three 10 metre sailing catamarans for scheduled day tours of the Abel Tasman National Park; also, two larger cruising catamarans of 13.5 and 14 metres for private and multiday charters. We are a small team and are looking for people of flexible and adaptable nature to work together to ensure a seamless great service is provided to our guests.  

About the role 

Three skipper positions: 

1) Skipper for scheduled and private day sailing tours and multiday tours for all our vessels. Fixed term November to April. 

2) Skipper for scheduled and private day tours on 10 metre sailing catamarans. Fixed term November to April. Kaiteriteri based. 

3) Casual sailing skipper for day tours, Kaiteriteri or Nelson based from August. Casual contract. 

The job and duties  

  • Our Skippers are responsible for delivering an outstanding experience and safe journey for our customers.  

  • The role is not only for skipper duties but also acting as a guide sharing the knowledge and stories of the region you are sailing. 

  • Our tours focus on small passenger numbers and the skipper may be the only crew on board.  

  • The skipper is responsible for managing passenger and crew safety onboard and ensuring procedural compliance. 

  • Responsible for efficient and safe operation of vessels, the day to day up keep, and vessel preparation for passengers.  

  • For multiday tours the skipper will be hosting guests and some preparation and presentation of meals may be required. 

Skills and experience 

  • You MUST hold a current Maritime New Zealand SRL ticket (Skipper Restricted Limits). The larger sailing catamarans require Passenger endorsement and 24 metre endorsement. (Or equivalent ringfenced ILM or above). 

  • You must be a competent and confident sailing skipper with a passion for sailing (training will be given particular to our vessels). 

  • Current First Aid certificate required. 

  • Be customer focused and enjoy working with a variety of people, ensuring they have the best experience while with us. 

  • Able to work alone, be self-motivated with a can-do attitude.  Also, the ability and flexibility to work within our small team to ensure a seamless service is provided to guests.  

  • A strong sense of responsibility, commitment and reliability. 

  • Ability to maintain a professional manner and sense of humour under pressure. 

  • Ability to problem solve and some mechanical knowledge is desirable. 

  • Knowledge of the Abel Tasman National Park and waters is desirable (training will be given)  

  • For overnight tours hospitality and entertaining experience an advantage. 

  • Have a love of the marine environment, surrounding ecosystems and sustainable practices. 

  • A reasonable level of fitness and stamina required for these physical roles. 

  • A full drivers licence with a passenger endorsement an advantage. 

The Right Opportunity for You? 

We operate 7 days a week and the positions are on a rotating roster basis and will include weekends and public holidays.  Multi-day tours will require the skipper to stay on board for the duration of the trip. 

Remuneration reflects individual skill and experience and is negotiable for the right candidate. Hours of work are also negotiable for the right candidate. 

Candidates must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.
