Kitchen Hands support the day-to-day operation of the kitchen. This involves assisting in food preparation, maintaining orderliness of food supplies and equipment, sanitation control and kitchen equipment maintenance. During slower times, they maintain the kitchen, whereas they jump in to assist in food production when the kitchen is particularly busy.

You will be under the supervision and on the job training is provided. Experience is not necessary but it is an advantage. 

We are after someone who is a real team player and is happy to assist with any task, no matter how big or small. Growth is encouraged and if you show initiative and a good work ethic it will be rewarded.

This position is a great starting point for any budding chef who is interested in gaining experience in a busy kitchen.

 

Kitchen Hand Duties and Responsibilities 

Clean Kitchen

The Kitchen Hand is responsible for maintaining the order and cleanliness of the kitchen's facilities up to government and company sanitation standards. They clean all kitchen surfaces, mop and sweep kitchen floors, put away dishes, pots and pans, organize food, clean out freezers, and remove trash.

Wash Dishes

Equally important, The Kitchen Hand ensures that all dishes are adequately sanitized by maintaining required water temperature and chemical levels. They may wash dishes by hand or also use a dish water depending on company procedures. They also polish silver, do chemical dips when applicable, and dry and put dishes away.

Assist with Food Preparation

Kitchen Hands assist line cooks by completing food preparation tasks. This can include everything from organizing the refrigerator and freezer to chopping vegetables, washing fruit, defrosting meat, and preparing sauces and marinades. They may fully prepare dishes that require little to no cooking, such as salads.

Maintain Kitchen

In order to maintain the kitchen, the Kitchen Hand makes sure that all appliances and cooking equipment are properly used and maintained, and may perform minor repairs if capable. They also take inventory of supplies and food, ensuring that the kitchen always has accurate stock of everything they need.

Kitchen Hands are quick-thinking multitaskers able to work fast-paced environments. They must be able to communicate well and perform a wide range of tasks. In addition to theirs general traits, employers are looking for Kitchen hands with these skills.
