About the business

We have 2 childcare centres, one nestled in gorgeous suburban Onehunga and the second tucked in beside Mangere Bridge Village, both oozing with personality and charm. We are on the hunt for a creative experienced chef to join our talented team where we inspire children to be lifelong learners! After three years of being a part of our team at School of Fish our wonderful chef is heading home to help support her family.

 

About the role

We are inviting applicants with experience in cooking and/or food preparation for multiple individuals to provide our children with fresh and nutritious meals every day. The successful applicant will have excellent time management, a love of food and nutrition, and be able to work independently and as part of a team. This is a busy role from 8 am and time efficiency is very important. 

Our children come from a variety of backgrounds, and have so we have different dietary needs that need to be met and applicants need to be able to provide food for a variety of different dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, dairy free and gluten free. Food safety qualifications are a must with a Basic Food Safety Training Certificate.
 

Benefits and perks

You will have the ability to work independently and autonomously, designing your own unique and fun menus for our children - the only limit is your own creativity! We compile all recipes of the children's favourite meals and some staff picks into an annual Christmas book- 'School of Fish Kitchen' for our families to enjoy the tasty nutritious meals at home too! This role is for a minimum 30 hours per week. The workins hours are from Monday to Friday, generally between 8 AM and 4 PM, with an average 36 hours per week. 

During the year we host events for our children and their families to attend and celebrate together, such as Mother's Day. During these events we plan, prepare and provide menus to go alongside catered food options for the event. These events can offer extra hours pay depending on the time of event and menu options needing to be prepared. 

Skills and experience

Our successful applicant will display the following the following skills: 

• Ability to work independently and autonomously.

• A good understanding of nutrition and dietary practices
• Ability to plan meals, order and organise supplies and work to deadlines
• Some experience with children
• Computer literate to be able to place online shopping orders, design menus and generate recipes. 

The responsibilities of the centre chef role includes:

• Preparing and serving of meals, including but not limited to: morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and late snack for our centre licensed for 60 children aged 3 months-5 year old children. 
• Procuring all your kitchen needs such as grocery shopping
• Periodically and seasonally creating menus and ensuring these meal plans are kept within centre budgets.
• Ensuring health & safety standards and regulations are met and maintained at a high level at all times
• Keeping a clean and tidy kitchen environment.
• Supporting Teachers with supervising children and meetings ratios if and when needed.
• Other daily responsibilities may include cleaning, laundry, washing and restocking of food.
