Our Trekking team offer full and half day guided walks within the Aoraki Mount Cook National Park, sharing their knowledge of the local flora and fauna and the history of the area through informative and entertaining commentary. We require an Assistant Trekking Manager to assist the Trekking Manager to build a team that take pride in their roles and have a passion for connecting with our guests with energy and enthusiasm.

What your day will look like

As the Assistant Trekking Manager, you will assist in all aspects of the Trekking department. You will also be hands on and be taking our groups and individuals on a guided interpretative trek in some of NZ's most amazing scenery, all the while ensuring a high standard of health and safety is maintained.

You'll be responsible for:

  • Take responsibility for the operation of the Trekking department in the absence of the Trekking Manager
  • Respond to any correspondence for the trekking office resolving problems making bookings, negotiating with agents and dealing with any customer complaints,
  • Speak fluent Japanese and demonstrate a knowledge of Japanese culture and customs,
  • Work with other members of the Trekking Team to create an exceptional product for clients,
  • Manage and co-ordinate staff requirements
  • Be able to competently perform all aspects of the trekking guide & Trekking supervisor roles to enable correct training and ensure product integrity.
  • Work with Trekking Manager to recruit seasonal trekking guides for the summer, completing reference checks, advertising, and interviewing
  • Ensuring a high level of Health and Safety is maintained and ensuring all staff follow the correct procedures and processes
  • Any other duties as required by the Trekking Manager / Tourism Manager

About you

Our teams live and work together so it's important that you have a positive attitude and an enthusiasm for working alongside and with others. You must have previous guiding or trekking experience, along with at least 1 year in a supervisory position in this field. Be a fluent speaker of the Japanese language and have an understanding and experience of Japanese etiquette & Culture

  • A natural leader, with the ability to motivate and lead a team;
  • Excellent at communicating with a diverse range of guests;
  • Experienced at presenting in front of others with confidence
  • Able to understand different cultures, specifically Japanese culture

Further Information

  • Applicants should be legally entitled to work in New Zealand, although assistance to obtain this may be provided for some roles.
  • All positions at Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Village Ltd have accommodation provided as part of our unique lifestyle package, with the weekly board & lodgings rates including three meals a day and power. Due to the idyllic, isolated location of Mt Cook, you will need to be comfortable working and living in a remote location.
