This is an exciting opportunity to be part of New Zealand’s newest, and the Bay of Plenty’s largest, tertiary education provider.
Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is one of New Zealand’s largest Institutes of Technology serving the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions with major campuses in Rotorua, Tauranga, Whakatane, Taupo and Tokoroa, and learning centres spread across the region.
This position is for a Café Chef with the Melting Pot team is within the Tourism, Hospitality and Service Industries Faculty. The Melting Pot Café is situated on our Mokoia campus in Rotorua and contributes in a big way to our values and on campus culture. In this position you will work with the Café Chef Manager and the Melting Pot crew, preparing, cooking and serving food options, ensuring the quality of every food item we serve! You will be preparing cabinet food, blackboard specials and catering for functions. You will be assisting with ordering and menu development as well as general kitchen and cleaning duties.
If you’re our perfect candidate you will be hard working, reliable, with a friendly outgoing personality and a ‘can do’ attitude. You will already have at least 2 years’ experience working in a commercial kitchen producing high quality food and ideally you will hold food safety certificates (Unit Standard 167 and 168). Experience in general catering is a must, but most importantly you will demonstrate a passion for great food, customer service, and quality.
The key responsibilities for this position include:
- Produce quality food for the Melting Pot Café
- Ensure compliance at all time of the onsite Food Control Plan and the Food Act (2014)
- Ensure the work environment is maintained in a safe condition at all times to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety in Employment Act (1992)
- Take all practicable steps to ensure individual personal safety and the safety of others
- Be correctly presented and dressed to satisfy statutory requirements as well as enhancing the image of the establishment
The skills, experience and qualifications required for this role include:
- Chef qualification with strengths in food hygiene and kitchen safety
- Knowledge of current industry trends
- At least 2 years’ work experience in a chef role
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to be self-motivating and able to work effectively individually and within a team
- A high level of professional and ethical conduct
- The ability to work under pressure
- Interested in continued enhancement of personal knowledge and abilities.
- Excellent time management skills
- Positive proactive and energetic working style
- A commitment to continued enhancement of personal knowledge and abilities
- PC based computer literacy skills
