Part Time weekend shifts 7 hours daily

The tamariki who come to Puketai require a safe nurturing environment where we can work together to help them make positive change at what is often a critical point in their lives. Their needs can be complex, and so are the journeys that brought them here.

But, as it is with all tamariki, the one thing that is constant in all their life is the need for good nourishing, wholesome food prepared with care. 

At Puketai we provide programmes for tamariki aged from 10 to 17 years to get back on track to living just like any other tamariki their age and a healthy diet underpins all the work we do.

What is the role of the Weekend Cook?

The Weekend Residential Cook is part of a team who plan menus and prepares meals for tamariki and staff. The role is between the hours of 11- 6pm and the salary band on offer is between $34,261 - $43,437.00 pro-rated to the hours worked and dependent on your experience, skill and qualifications you will bring to the role.

Key responsibilities include supporting deliveries, ensuring adequate food stores and preparing and serving quality meals. The Residential Cook will also step up and take responsibility to operate as Residential Chef in the Chef’s absence to cover planned leave.

This is a busy kitchen and we are looking for someone who takes pride in their work and is flexible to work in an environment where no two days is the same, while building rewarding relationships with the rest of the team, staff, whanau, visitors and tamariki.

The skills and experience you need to be a Weekend Cook:

  • Reliability and a positive “can do attitude” with the  ability to work autonomously as you will be managing a busy kitchen  (often on your own)
  • A current First Aid Certification is desired and a Food Handling level 167 and/or 168 is essential
  • Flexibility, sensitivity, and empathy are important qualities in this person due to the sensitive nature of our work
  • Excellent food hygiene practices with a someone who takes pride in their work
  • Highly organised with outstanding time management skills
