The Role

‘Palliative Care - provision of humane and compassionate care for people in the last phases of an incurable disease, so they may live the final months, days and hours of their life as fully and comfortably as possible with dignity’.

As a Specialist Paliative Care Registered Nurse you will work as part of a multi-discliplinary team as a named-nurse providing tailored services that meet the individuals nursing, medical, social, spiritual and emotional needs. You will need to know how to effectively assess patients picking up the slightest changes and develop holistic care plans. You will also use your nursing experience, knowledge and skill to deliver excellent end-of-life care to patients and their families.

Everyday will present new challenges, as you tailor your care to new patients. You will also be looked upon as the Specialist Palliative Care Nurse to provide advice, support and advocacy on the following areas:

  • Pain & Symptom Control - manage discomfort, pain, nausea and other side effects to ensure your patients are comfortable and lucid to enjoy the people around you and make important decisions around a patients dying/ death journey.

  • Holistic Care - every patient differs in their spiritual needs and religious beliefs. Sometimes a patients needs and beliefs may differ from yours - so you need to be selfless and look at what death means to your patient, how can you assist them in saying good-bye or can you assist in organizing a particular religious ceremony or ritual.

  • Family Meetings - often led by the patients nurse or social worker, family meetings are important to keep family members informed about stages, conditions, side-effects and what to expect. These meetings can be tough as often the family find the reality of the end-stage of a loved ones life difficult to process.

  • Coordination of Care - specialist palliative care nurses are excellent at integrating healthcare and insuring that all involved services share information to provide better care outcomes. This team could include inpatient doctor, GP, pharmacists, clergy, funeral director, EPOA’s and social workers.

  • Bereavement Care - working with surviving loved one/s to assist them through the grieving process

Our Clients

We work with a number of differing clients who offer palliative care services - from in-home care, in-patient care, community teams and hospital settings. Agency Palliative Care work is a great way to explore specialising in Palliative Care. Over the last year, some of our Agency Staff who were interested in Palliative Care but were wanting more security, have been facilitated into permanent roles with some of our clients.

Skills & Experience

We welcome applications from those with experience in all areas of nursing, who have a keen interest in caring for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Palliative Care takes time and experience to specialise in - but it’s not for everyone. The emotional toll of working with the final stages of life everyday takes a special kind of person - but it will be some of the most rewarding nursing of your career. Experience we look for includes:

  • At least 12-months NZ Nursing Experience (or comparative Healthcare Systems) or 6-months NZ experience post CAP course completion
  • Current Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) with the NZ Nursing Council
  • Ability to obtain verbal references from two senior referees whom you have worked with in the last 2 years
  • Must be eligible to work in NZ with appropriate immigration visa
  • Niki- T certified
  • Completed ‘Essentials in Palliative Care’ course
  • Medimap competent
