The Department of Conservation has just received a new injection of funding for Biodiversity and we are looking for a Principal Science Advisor to join our team and help us halt the decline of our threatened species.
The Terrestrial Ecosystems Team has specialists spread throughout New Zealand that report to three managers, based in Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton. This position is within the Northern Team and will report to Hamilton.
The work of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Team is essential within the Department. We provide advice on the presence, threat status and management requirements of indigenous ecosystems and species. You will be working with other business groups within DOC to shape and influence the direction of threatened species and ecosystem management programmes.
You will also design research by management programmes where critical data is uncertain or absent and support our rangers with research programmes and management on the ground. You may be required to present expert evidence when the Department is involved in RMA hearings, Board of Enquiry and environment court proceedings. You will therefore be well respected as an expert in your field.
Your role will be both to provide leadership and advice to the senior managers within the Department. You may also provide strategic advice and input on work programmes like the Biodiversity Strategy refresh scheduled for 2020 and the Threatened Species Strategy which is currently in draft form. You will need to be able to balance a variety of different social and cultural perspectives as we plan our work and support our rangers in the field with the work they do best.
You will play a significant role mentoring and coaching members of the terrestrial ecosystems unit, so you need to enjoy working with people and have significant experience collaborating on research projects.
You will have at least 10 years' experience post PhD in conservation ecology, be well published and respected in your field, and have proven leadership and influencing skills. Experience in local or central Government will be an advantage but is not essential for the role.
The position is full-time and based in Hamilton, with travel required on occasion.
