About the organisation

Oranga Tamariki, Ministry for Children are on a journey to ensure that all tamariki are in loving whanau and communities, and they want you to go on this journey with them. Their vision is that New Zealand values the wellbeing of tamariki above all else. They believe that in the right environment, with the right people surrounding and nurturing them, any child can, and should flourish.

The Policy group are building their capability across all their current teams and will ultimately be looking to create a new fourth policy team in order to deliver a large and ambitious work programme.

The work

Under the current Government, the policy work of Oranga Tamariki is going in a new and exciting direction. With line of sight from the Minister to the front line services, it’s critical that the work stemming from the policy group is suited to both audiences. They take a holistic view and their work covers all elements of a child’s care and wellbeing from the time they are first referred to Oranga Tamariki until they are transitioning and being supported out of care. The work the policy group does has a real and practical impact with the focus on making implementable policy.

As well as providing primary policy advice, the group also feeds into the policy work of many other agencies, so the opportunity to collaborate across the public sector is considerable.

About the role:

The Policy Manager will play an influential role within the group and the wider organisation. With a strategic view, you will be able to sit above the detail and take a long term perspective to the work, identifying upcoming opportunities and challenges.

You will be required to input into the groups’ wider strategic vision. Therefore, you must be comfortable in sharing ideas, offering creative solutions and at times, challenging the status quo. Top class communication skills will be critical to your success in this role, and you will be able to demonstrate your ability to bring others together, whether they be on the same team, in different organisations, or among different discipline areas.

Day to day you will be:

  • Coaching and mentoring your team to help them reach their potential
  • Managing your staff and work programme to achieve the team’s deliverables
  • Building and managing relationships, both inside and outside the organisation
  • Representing Oranga Tamariki on a wide range of policy issues, in a broad array of settings

About you:

You will have strong policy and Machinery of Government experience, recognise what policy best practice looks like, and model that to help build your team’s capability. You will be able to demonstrate your experience leading complex cross-agency projects and will be skilled in negotiation and influencing. You enjoy working in a dynamic environment and have the ability to juggle many balls at any given time.

Oranga Tamariki values diversity of thought, and someone who has broad experience across the public sector would add a lot of value, so you don’t necessarily need to come from the social sector. You will however, have a fundamental interest in improving outcomes for tamariki.
