About the role

The Evidence, Synthesis and Reporting team has responsibility for developing the education narrative, bringing together and making sense of the various pieces of evidence about the state of the New Zealand Education system and learners' progress and achievement. This includes analysing and interpreting the underlying drivers and trends of education progress and achievement for priority learner groups (i.e. Māori, Pasifika). The team is also responsible for the regular reporting functions of education information covering administrative data, national and international education surveys. These responsibilities involve statistical analysis of trends and drivers, interpreting the data within its context, understanding the meaning and limitations of the data, and communicating the results using a range of products for different customers.

The Senior Analyst will work with their colleagues within and across teams, providing high quality statistical analysis, interpretation and reporting to explain the story of educational progress and achievement. They will help inform policy and programme decisions, ultimately improving student achievement. This position also acts as a technical mentor to others in the team and is responsible for supporting, monitoring, and reviewing work completed by others from a quality assurance perspective as well as supporting the growth of skills and competencies.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have a strong customer focus, proven oral and written communication skills, and be comfortable with a range of statistical and data manipulation tools. You are committed to continuous improvement and excited by the idea of looking for new and better ways to help people understand data and make use of it. Engaging with others, working collaboratively and thinking strategically are strengths you have. You are calm under pressure, managing multiple deadlines and work products at once. Experience in data visualisation would be useful.

You will also offer the following:

  • Demonstrated strong problem solving, numeracy and analytical skills and experience, able to see innovative solutions to technical problems
  • Ability to navigate complex situations effectively and efficiently, functioning under pressure or in situations which are ambiguous, while building and maintaining positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of quantitative statistical analytical frameworks and techniques, advanced technologies, methods and tools and their application
  • Confident at influencing, engaging and communicating across an organisation and externally
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to develop these in others
  • Computer literacy including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, MS PowerPoint to an intermediate or advanced level
