The Ministry for the Environment's purpose is to make Aotearoa New Zealand the most liveable place in the world for our children, their children and their mokopuna.

We are the government's primary advisor on the environment and its relationship to New Zealand's economy. We make sure our environment supports New Zealand's prosperity - economic, social and cultural - without compromising it for future generations.   Our environmental stewardship makes a real difference for New Zealanders.

We are respected for our strategic view and fresh thinking. We design innovative, durable and sustainable solutions to complex challenges.  To do this, we draw on the diverse talents of our people and build strong, purposeful and productive relationships with our stakeholders.

We have a full-time permanent opportunity for an innovative, positive and relationship focused Senior Policy Analyst to join Mana Taiao in our Wellington office.

Mana Taiao is an energetic and highly motivated team that works at the forefront of MfE's ambition to improve Crown-Māori relationships.  Our work is centred on:

  • developing strong partnerships and fostering relationships and opportunities through collaboration with iwi/Māori;
  • negotiating the environment components of Treaty of Waitangi settlements and implementing settlement commitments;
  • developing policy across the Natural Resources sector from a Māori perspective;
  • supporting MfE staff to weave Māori perspectives into their work.

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • An understanding of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Ao Māori and engaging with Māori/iwi.
  • Experience in the negotiation of Treaty of Waitangi settlements and implementation of settlement commitments;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the confidence to build and maintain relationships with iwi/Māori.
  • An ability to apply problem solving skills and strong communication skills;  you will ask questions, listen and understand other's perspectives.  You will use storytelling, insights from data, real life examples and views of end users to shape your work

To be successful in the role of Senior Policy Analyst you will have significant experience in a policy or engagement role, preferably within central government, local government or the private sector.

You will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and track record of initiating, building and growing relationships with iwi/Māori and leadership experience including the ability to inspire, influence and build the capability of others.

We are looking for exceptional candidates whose working style demonstrates:

  • Innovative thinking - Bring fresh thinking and be receptive to others' ideas and ways of working. Problem-solve and advise with impact.      Think strategically and consider regulatory and non-regulatory approaches when implementing policy changes.
  • A focus on action - Achieve ambitious goals and operate with a high degree of accountability and judgement.

As an individual you'll have significant drive to continually grow and develop both yourself and those around you. We are a Ministry that invests in the development of its people and in the future you will have opportunities to rotate into other subject areas within the Ministry.
