The National Screening Unit is in the midst of an exciting period with a new national screening programme being implemented while many of the existing programmes are undergoing significant development. The Ministry is also in the process of refreshing our technology and tools which creates a number of exciting new ways to do our work.

We are looking for a top notch analyst with a real eye for detail, coupled with the ability to talk with those that need their analytics. We can provide the opportunity to work with data that has meaning and can make a difference to New Zealanders lives.

The National Screening Unit is responsible for the national leadership of three important cancer screening programmes (breast, cervical and bowel cancers), two newborn screening programmes (hearing and rare metabolic conditions) and one antenatal quality initiative. The team are committed to ‘help make screening programmes better' by providing leadership and technical support for the on-going monitoring and evaluation of these programmes.

As a member of the analytical team you will build a close working relationship with the screening programmes and support them to improve programme outcomes with their regular monitoring and reporting as well as being involved in projects and responding to adhoc requests. In this role you will use your technical skills to extract and summarise data from a number of different databases. You will use your analytical skills to identify ways to investigate issues and answer questions from the available data.  You will be working closely with a team that includes senior analysts and public health medicine specialists providing opportunity for further development and extension of your skill sets.

You'll have experience analysing health data and be skilled in translating data into information. Your analytical expertise will enable you to rapidly learn how to extract and manipulate data from our various data sources and give meaning to the numbers.  Your oral and written communication skills will mean that customers receive the information that best suits their needs.

To excel in this role you will have:

  • A keen eye for detail and passion for delivering a quality product

  • Experience using SAS EG

  • Strong statistical analysis and interpretation skills (proven ability to analyse data to produce meaningful, fit for purpose information)

  • Experienced in producing reports containing epidemiological information to a publishable standard

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write and talk about technical issues clearly and concisely to non-technical people in plain English

  • Strong customer focus, able to manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders and develop new products to meet end user needs

  • A background in screening or public health will be an advantage as well as experience using Qlik Sense, R, and/or SQL

You must demonstrate an understanding and awareness of the Treaty of Waitangi, and the role of the Ministry and health sector in reducing health disparities and improving health outcomes for Māori.

We can offer you a vibrant and friendly environment where you will have the opportunity to work with people from a range of different disciplines to extend your skills.
