The Treasury is the New Zealand Government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to be a world-leading Treasury working towards living standards for New Zealanders.
We have an opportunity for an Advisor and/or a Senior Advisor to join our Governance and Appointments team. Our team is responsible for providing advice to Ministers, Chairs, directors, and candidates about board appointments and governance of more than 50 State Owned Entities (SOE), Crown Companies and other entities.
We have two roles to support or lead our advice to Ministers, and our engagement with the Boards, with regard to skills, board succession planning, performance and policy for best governance practice and diversity. There is flexibility in which role is at an Advisor and which is at a Senior Advisor level, depending on the skills/experience of interested candidates.
We are looking for a Senior Advisor who can take a lead role in undertaking board appointments and providing governance advice on these entities. In order to understand the needs of entities, this role requires strong commercial acumen, including being able to understand the current and future strategic direction of entities, the industries they operate in, how they compare to their peers, and their risks and opportunities. A strong understanding of entities will allow the Senior Advisor to advise on appointment of directors with the appropriate experience and skills to help drive greater commercial performance, and to advise on broader governance issues.
We want to hear from you if you have:
- Good understanding of governance and the role of boards and the need for diversity
- Strong relationship skills and credibility to engage with and influence senior decision makers
- Successful senior recruitment experience
- Commercial experience
- Drive for results and ability to manage multiple processes
We are looking for an Advisor who can help coordinate and support the sourcing, advice and facilitation of the selection of quality candidates for appointments to Crown entity and company boards, and supports the preparation of advice on achieving the Crown's ownership objectives across the portfolio of Crown entities held by the team. In order to understand the needs of entities, this role requires commercial acumen - this includes being able to understand the strategic direction of entities and the industries in which they operate. A strong understanding of entities will ensure that the appropriate directors are appointed to drive greater commercial performance.
We want to hear from you if you have:
- Excellent writing skills with strong attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple processes
- An understanding of governance and the role of boards
- Good searching techniques
- Strong project management skills
- Drive for results and focus on timeliness
We can offer:
- A commitment to providing work and training opportunities that support your development and career aspirations

- A collaborative work environment where you will interact with a range of people, within the Group, in the wider Treasury and with a large range of external stakeholders
