-   Dame Whina Cooper

The Office of the Children’s Commissioner has an opportunity for you to contribute to our understanding of how NZ children are doing, the barriers they face to having good life experiences, and how we can advocate for changes that could make a real difference.

Reporting to the Director of Strategy, Rights & Advice, you will join an established team who support the Children’s Commissioner to meet the statutory responsibilities; to advocate for the interests and well-being of children, promoting and monitoring the implementation of Children’s Convention, and provide child-centred advice to government agencies.

  • Maintain a watching brief on certain children’s issues, including government policy, academic research and media / social media.
  • Preparing short one-page summaries on topics related to child-wellbeing based on existing evidence and knowledge base.
  • Providing support across the whole office as required.

With energy and adaptability, you will relish a learning based environment, and strive to gain new skills and knowledge to grow your skill set.  This is an opportunity to gain an amazing exposure to government, and put your qualification into practice.

Skills, experience and competencies required to flourish in this position are:

  • Some understanding and knowledge of statutory, legislative and public service processes.
  • Demonstrated writing abilities.
  • The capability to self-manage and motivate.
  • Ability to synthesise information, draw conclusions and make clear recommendations.

  • Feel comfortable using Te Reo Māori and engaging in tikanga practices.

Join an uplifting and innovative organisation, where you will enjoy working in an open, supportive, culturally astute environment, where staff are valued and encouraged to exceed their personal best in everything they do.
