Are you passionate about island conservation? Ever dreamed of working in New Zealand's wild Subantarctic region?
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the initial stages of a project at the forefront of international island conservation. The role is with a DOC project team investigating feasibility and undertaking initial planning for a project to eradicate remaining mammalian pests (pigs, cats and mice) from Auckland Island (465 km south of Bluff) in New Zealand's World Heritage listed subantarctic region.
The Department of Conservation is seeking a talented person to support planning and delivery of complex field tasks to inform planning. The positions will also plan and manage logistics and source equipment and supplies, ensuring quality standards are met.
The role is based in Invercargill. The successful applicant will be mostly office based with a field component and some management of contractors and suppliers. The role will also lead field work on Auckland Island periodically, requiring a good level of physical fitness. You must be capable and enjoy working as part of a team in a remote and challenging environment.
The ambitious project is nationally significant and will have tangible benefits for unique wildlife on a large-scale. The project is aligned with the Predator Free New Zealand initiative's interim goal for ‘Eradication of predators from New Zealand's Island Nature Reserves by 2025'. Success will be dependent on quality planning and delivery through teamwork.
The successful applicant will be adaptable and motivated with proven performance in planning logistics and field work. You will be a practical thinker and have strong organisational skills including data management and report writing.
Eligibility to work in New Zealand is mandatory, including a valid work visa covering the whole period of employment if applying internationally.
