Detail information about job New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter - 2019 Graduate Opportunities. Terms and conditions vacancy

At Pacific Aluminium, we are a diverse team of talented, enthusiastic people who foster a culture of inclusion. We are looking for graduates with outstanding ability, the hunger and drive to learn new skills and gain lifelong experience as part of a successful and dynamic organisation.

The career opportunities are limitless with Pacific Aluminium. As a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, a global leader in the mining and metals sector, our company operates across six continents in more than 40 countries. Be part of a world of opportunity.

No matter how they may differ, our team members share one thing in common - it’s a belief that work is more rewarding when we are accepted and valued for our differences, not judged by them. It’s a belief that regardless of how we look, speak or think, we all have something to contribute and it’s this contribution that makes for a great organisation and fulfilling career.

We are genuinely involved in the communities where we operate. We hire and buy locally, support local education, social and health programs and lend a hand where it’s needed to community groups.

Our Business:

Pacific Aluminium was established in 2011 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Rio Tinto, with five primary assets in New Zealand and Australia. Our smelting operations include New Zealand Aluminium Smelters in Invercargill, New Zealand; Boyne Smelters in Gladstone, Queensland; and Bell Bay Aluminium near Launceston, Tasmania.

With a total workforce of close to 4,000 employees and contractors, Pacific Aluminium produces in excess of 1.7 million tonnes of aluminium, primarily for export to Asia where our metal is fabricated into essential products for the transport, construction, packaging and electrical industries.

Within the smelter operations, our carbon plants process over half a million tonnes of carbon based materials which are crushed, screened, mixed and then baked in large furnaces to produce feedstock for reduction. In the reduction lines, hundreds of individual cells connected in series, and operating from 120-360kA DC and around 1000°C through an electrochemical process produce molten aluminium from alumina. Our casthouses then take this molten aluminium and solidify it into a range of shapes and alloys for our customers around the world.

Each aluminium smelter has extremely complex logistics with respect to workflow and material movements, requiring sophisticated, large scale materials handling equipment and some of the most complex manually operated cranes in heavy industry.

As a graduate engineer within PacAl not only will you be exposed to the daily challenges of operating and optimising a range of equipment and processes, but you will have the opportunity to make a genuine contribution to the bottom-line of the business, through projects focusing on revenue, cost, safety or the environment.

Our Graduate Opportunities:

We have graduate opportunities available at New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) in the following disciplines:

  • Chemical & Process / Materials Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Metallurgy

Who we’re looking for:

  • A high performer in the final year of Bachelor degree (in 2018)
  • A safety-conscious team member who practices care and concern for colleagues
  • A flexible team player who is able to manage competing demands by prioritising workload
  • An excellent communicator (demonstrable verbal, written and listening skills)
  • A contributor—although you’ll be learning, you must have the confidence to use your initiative and be willing to share your opinion
  • A person who has both attention to detail and a creative and innovative mindset
  • A problem solver who practices logical decision making skills.

Our graduate program may provide you with development opportunities through rotation to one or more operational sites.

Based at Tiwai Point, NZAS makes aluminium with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world, and is the only smelter in the world making ultra-high purity metal using renewable hydroelectricity. Aluminium remains the metal of the future, with vehicles being built lighter and faster to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city is the commercial hub of Southland. The city is famous for its’ easy access to outdoor adventure— fishing, snow sports, rugged terrain, waterfalls and wildlife — with a balance of all the modern facilities you would expect from a thriving city’s restaurants, creative and cultural experiences, shopping and sporting opportunities.

In return, you will be rewarded with a two-year graduate program learning from leaders in the industry. You will work on real projects to solve real business problems, while being coached and mentored by our skilled and knowledgeable specialists.

Our graduates are highly valued by our operational sites and form an important part of our talent for the future. Your commitment and passion will be rewarded with a competitive salary and access to company benefits including 10% company contribution to superannuation, and a performance incentive scheme.

As a passionate equal opportunity employer, NZAS continues to increase our focus on gender diversity - therefore we strongly encourage females to apply, as well as applications from people of all backgrounds.
