Geotechnical Laboratory Research Engineer
Civil and Natural Resources Engineering

  • Full-time at 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE)
  • Continuing (i.e. permanent) position

An exciting opportunity exists to join the team in the Geotechnical Laboratory in the College of Engineering.

The role of the Research Engineer is to provide high quality specialised technical services and effective operational management of the Geotechnical Research Laboratory so that the needs of staff, students and external clients are met. This role is multi-faceted and includes research, providing ad hoc specialist guidance to students and staff, and the design, development, commissioning and maintenance of equipment.

Examples of potential activities are:

  • Research best-practices in other leading geotechnical laboratories around the world and work with students and academics to ensure that the work being carried out at the University of Canterbury is world-class
  • Work with academics and students to develop new experimental techniques. (i.e. advanced visualization with transparent soils)
  • Performing element tests or other experiments to enrich existing and new datasets
  • Liaise with external clients interested in engaging the laboratory for element testing
  • Contribute to funding bid applications in terms of writing, technical review and assessment

Candidates must:

  • Hold a Master's Degree or higher level qualification in Engineering that is relevant to advanced geotechnical laboratory testing and development of mechanical/geotechnical systems
  • Have demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the engineering research environment and of technical experimental design
  • Have an advanced knowledge with the use of advanced soil testing devices and/or mechanical systems and/or equipment development
  • Demonstrate self-motivation in delivering high quality results

The College of Engineering has just completed a three year long, $163 million investment of its engineering specialist laboratory wings and main teaching spaces. Staff and students now have access to some of the best modern facilities and technologies for teaching, learning and research in the southern hemisphere.
