The role you’ll play

You’ll leverage this unprecedented investment in property development to reshape the supplier landscape nationally as necessary to reach Housing New Zealand’s goals. Take a global outlook on how Housing New Zealand meets the challenges of scale, cost and speed within the residential construction sector. Solving New Zealand’s housing challenges will require the development of new and sustainable supplier markets and growing New Zealand businesses and skill base to ultimately accelerate innovation and productivity in the construction sector. Work closely with Housing New Zealand’s construction professionals to deliver commercial outcomes that make a real difference for New Zealand and New Zealanders.   

No procurement team in New Zealand has the same opportunity to look both domestically and internationally to influence, grow and disrupt a sector at this scale. Nor do other roles come close to having the same level of positive commercial and social benefit, directly influencing the lives and wellbeing of Kiwis through healthier and more accessible housing.

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Director-Strategic Sourcing and Supplier Management, this newly created role is a pivotal appointment. The Commercial Director – Construction is key to this programmes’ success. HNZ has developed a multi-year large scale supplier strategy for this transformation and this role is the commercial and procurement lead for this exciting and challenging programme. It’s accountable for transforming strategic procurement for construction for HNZ to meet the future build programme in an optimised commercial and economic manner. You will effectively be changing the way we build houses in NZ.

Your responsibilities

• Provide robust, effective commercial leadership and direction and advice to HNZ’s construction leadership forum and the large scale transformation programme
• Develop, agree and drive implementation of appropriate procurement strategies and methodologies
• Actively influence day to day decisions, shaping strategy and the direction of the HNZ’s construction programme
• Provide advice and constructive challenge to business groups regarding strategic sourcing and supplier relationship management and lead HNZ’s transformation of residential construction.
• Leverage relationships with internal and external peers to create a collaborative approach in identifying opportunities and solving business challenges

About you & what’s in it for you

With your senior commercial background being supplemented by strong understanding of procurement, you will be able to use your knowledge and construction sector experience as you develop trust and credibility with senior management and the broader construction sector.  You’ll have experience in leading and delivering multiple high risk/high value projects of a complex nature concurrently and thrive in a high pace environment.

You will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good stakeholder relationships through consultation and partnership and be able to work at all levels within the business and externally. You’ll have senior leadership experience and a strong knowledge of procurement concepts, methodologies and practices.
