General Manager - Environmental Research and Consulting

Land and Water Science Ltd (L&WS) has an outstanding opportunity for an Environmental Professional looking to expand their management experience. We are a small, rapidly growing research and consultancy business with a focus on the development of novel applied science outputs for the Environmental and Agribusiness sectors. Current research and applied consulting contracts include Central (MPI, MBIE) and Local Government (District and Regional Councils Nationwide), Lead Primary Industry Groups and Leading Academic Institutions Nationally (see www.landwaterscience.co.nz). Our aim is to place the most relevant and accessible science directly into the hands of land managers and users.

We are seeking a Managing Director to oversee the day-to-day operations of our company.

This is a unique career option for an experienced business manager seeking a new leadership path and an opportunity to apply his / her business skills. While prior environmental consulting experience is desired, we welcome entrepreneurial individuals from the agribusiness or equivalent sectors who want a career change focused on driving profitability on the revenue side of the business. The General Manager will work with the Business Director(s) to set and meet the company’s financial goals.

We understand that our company is our people and our success is rooted in their professional development. This position will be responsible for leading the office and technical staff in client deliverables as well as expanding the client base and current client engagements through business development.

Job Responsibilities:

The General Managers' responsibilities fall under three basic areas: day-to-day oversight of operations, project delivery to assure that Work Product meets L&WS standards, and business development activities.

Help drive the financial success of the company:

  • Meet topline revenue goals
  • Maintenance of healthy Gross, and Net Profits Margins (resource management: employees, equipment, subcontractors, etc.)

Lead and motivate an interdisciplinary team of scientists, and technical specialists:

  • Mentor/develop employees
  • Set goals and conduct performance reviews
  • Maintain staff billability level
  • Direct Client Project Work
    • Project development, initiation, planning, execution, and closeout
    • Project execution and control
    • Project closeout oversight

Market and apply novel tools developed in-house to support our key communities achieve their goals

Required Experience:

Candidates who meet the following requirements will be considered:

  • 5 - 10 years in the environmental or agribusiness profession – with evidence of a progressive increase in responsibility
    • Experience and expertise in one or more of the following technical areas: geospatial (GIS), surveying, environmental engineering, water quantity and quality, ecology, soil science, farm systems, farm systems compliance or extension, nutrient budgeting
    • Consulting experience preferred
    • 3 - 5 years of proven leadership/managerial experience
    • Prior experience managing P&L or financial responsibility
    • Technical expertise in an environmental discipline with established industry connections
      • Agricultural and/or environmental
      • A minimum of a BS in engineering, environmental, or an applied science
        • Postgraduate qualification desired
        • Excellent communication skills (presenting and writing)
