As the nation’s central bank, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is responsible for maintaining a sound and dynamic monetary and financial system. Its core mandate includes operating monetary policy to maintain price stability, meeting the currency needs of the public as well as overseeing and operating efficient payment systems.

This Wellington based position leads a mid-sized team of communication specialists and is part of the Bank’s broader leadership group. The Head of Communications reports to the Assistant Governor and Head of Operations and maintains a close working relationship with the Bank’s new Governor. 

The Reserve Bank is trusted and well-regarded, both domestically and internationally. A key focus of this position will be to engage with a broader audience, support greater transparency and accessibility and further ‘demystify’ the organisation’s purpose and story. The Head of Communications will help embed and integrate a high performance culture, with greater levels of cultural awareness and inclusion.

This broad portfolio provides strategic leadership across:

  • Brand definition and management
  • Internal and external communications
  • The Bank’s digital footprint and social media presence
  • Production and publishing of key publications
  • Parliamentary liaison and ministerial inquiries
  • Media interaction and the Bank’s public speaking programme
  • Acting as spokesperson where appropriate

Financial domain experience is not a requirement. You will need senior management experience with a deep communications and/or media background, along with:

  • Sound judgement, with proven capacity to  identify and manage reputational risk 
  • Interpersonal agility, with outstanding oral, visual and written communication
  • The capacity to lead, mentor and manage a high performing team
  • Superb relationship management and influencing ability
  • A talent for translating the technical into the comprehensible
