Detail information about job National Health & Safety and Environmental Manager. Terms and conditions vacancy

  • Flexibility with the location of this role!
  • Opportunity to step up, or for someone who wants a role that they can take ownership of.

At SSA New Zealand we are proud of our heritage as a national stevedore company, we have over 30 years' experience and currently operating in 8 New Zealand Ports. SSA NZL handles every type of cargo including bulk cargoes, grab hire, log loading, timber products, breakbulk cargoes, project / heavy lift cargoes, container handling and bulk logistics moving in and out of the country.

We are looking for a National Health & Safety and Environmental Manager to lead all H&S, Environmental, Health & Wellbeing initiatives and improvements for SSA NZL. Ideally we are looking for someone to hit the ground running, so it would be advantageous to come with industry knowledge in either a port or forestry environment, but this is not necessary.

Whilst this role has a large focus on working with Senior Managers and Ops Managers in delivering strategy, there is still a significant requirement for this candidate to be hands on and work closely with all levels through-out the operation.

To be successful in this role you'll need the following attributes/experience:

  • Relevant H&S qualifications and/or ideally 5-10 years' experience working in a senior H&S role
  • Experience in developing and delivering H&S strategies within a high safety sensitive environment
  • Qualifications/experience in accident and investigation processes to ensure all sites meet the standards required for regulatory bodies
  • A passion for Health & Safety and the environment, but most of all a genuine interest in our people and their safety
  • Strong leadership, and influencing skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills as this role deals with clients, ports, industry regulators, suppliers, management, and all employees
  • Have a collaborative approach, ability to work at all levels, strong motivator and team builder
  • Ability to work at heights as there is an expectation that this role will have a hands on approach, which may require this person to go on-board the vessel

The nature of this role is extremely busy and holds significant importance within the organisation, so we are looking for someone to take ownership of this role.

There will be an extensive amount of travel throughout NZ, ensuring there is on-going visibility, leadership, on-site training and engagement with both employees, customers and industry bodies.
You may also be required to work weekends and/or shifts outside of a 9 to 5 pattern as the Port environment operates 24/7, and an on-call component is required should an incident/accident occur.
We are however flexible with the location of this role, as we have a national presence in the 8 Port locations, and a support office in Auckland.

The successful candidate will be required to undergo a pre-employment medical examination, Ministry of Justice Police Check and Pre-employment Drug and Alcohol test.

If this role sounds like your next move, we want to hear from you.
