MOTAT is an interactive museum with a focus on creating a fun, visually stimulating environment for its customers.  It is home to a unique mix of collections and experiences. Our goal is to make MOTAT a "must experience" museum and we want your help to continue that journey. This is an exciting time at MOTAT and a great time to join the Exhibitions team in this visitor experience focused role.

As Exhibitions Curator you will be responsible for producing creative and innovative content for exhibitions, temporary displays or installations and other interpretive product at MOTAT. As a senior role within the Exhibitions team, you will also manage a small team of Exhibition Developers and volunteers, providing them with supervision, support and guidance in the delivery of their roles.

The position is part of a team dedicated to devising and delivering interpretation that is based on MOTAT’s strategic goals and aligned with our collection strengths and target audiences. The team aims to deliver interpretive tools that will delight, captivate and inspire multi-generational audiences.

Key responsibilities:

  • Leading small exhibition projects, drawing on the skills and experience of other team members as required. Undertaking concept development and research and delivering curatorial content for larger collection-based exhibitions.
  • Gathering and critically analysing interpretative information to ensure that MOTAT’s interpretation is engaging, accurate, and tells a compelling story.
  • Devising and implementing creative approaches to non-collection based displays using a variety of mediums such as objects, physical interactives and multimedia.
  • Reviewing and editing the work of other Exhibitions team members, to ensure accurate copy and consistent information delivery across MOTAT’s exhibition projects.
  • Developing and helping evaluate exhibition and other interpretive proposals.
  • Working closely with member of the Museum Experience Hub, to develop marketing and communications plans and to develop opportunities for additional events that complement the interpretation projects.

We want to hear from you if you have:

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a similar role and a tertiary qualification in museum studies or a relevant field. Demonstrated experience in public communication within a museum or curatorial environment.
  • Highly creative with experience developing interpretive content, including written, audio-visual and interactive materials for cross-generational audiences, with the ability to identify, understand and respond to target audiences.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to express complex processes in simple and engaging ways.
  • Good time management skills, able to prioritise workloads across multiple projects and meet deliverables. With the ability to work quickly, to meet tight deadlines and to respond with agility to opportunities as they arise.
  • Strong team work skills; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external stakeholders and team members and be able to lead small teams of people.
  • Can demonstrate an understanding of modern museum best practice. Vernon experience (or similar CMS) would be highly desirable.
