Fire and Emergency New Zealand is a Crown Entity established on 1 July 2017 under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017. The role of our new organisation is to reduce unwanted fires, respond to structural and vegetation fires and other emergencies including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous substance related incidents, natural disasters and support increased community resilience.

Our new, unified organisation provides a fire and emergency service that delivers for communities, and the firefighters who serve them, now and in the future.

The Audit Manager is responsible for provide advice to the Chief Executive and Audit and Risk Committee with particular emphasis on the integrity of data, systems, and controls.

The process includes making recommendations for the purpose of improving the performance, accountability and efficiency of Fire and Emergency.

The purpose of this position is to:

  • Develop and lead the audit team in a professional manner, which seeks to ensure that it is effective and commands a high standard of respect both internally and externally
  • Conduct a systematic, objective and constructive review and appraisal of all the Fire and Emergency New Zealand systems for the purpose of providing the Chief Executive with confidence about the adequacy, efficiency, economy and effectiveness of internal management policies, practices and controls
  • Prepare and present the annual audit strategy, plan and programme of audits to the Audit and Risk Committee at the beginning of each financial year
  • Issue professional reports on audit activities to management and the Audit and Risk Committee as appropriate
  • Maintain a high calibre fraud prevention programme including fraud prevention strategies which incorporate strong internal controls, ongoing anti-fraud education programs, regular fraud audits and maintenance of fraud policies
  • Work closely with the National Manager, Risk to ensure our audit activity aligns to the organisation risks
  • Work closely with the National Manager, Operational Efficiency and Readiness to deliver an audit service which complements the work of the operational audit team
  • Manage the activities, programmes, development and training of internal audit staff
  • Ensure that the audit team is managed such that the audit plan is achieved
  • Manage effectively budgets and other allocated resources
  • Perform special audit investigations and undertaking and other responsibilities of a confidential nature as requested by Senior Managers or the Audit and Risk Committee
  • Keep up to date and where appropriate explore new audit techniques, especially as they pertain to the management of risk and information technology

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • To establish and maintain strong professional relationships with the Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee, the Chief Executive, and Senior Management
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Experience in a public sector internal audit role

The remuneration range for this position is $150,428 to $176,974.
