Swimming is an important recreation activity for many New Zealanders, and ensuring people are safe and confident in the water is a key focus for Hamilton Pools.

We are currently recruiting for a new and exciting position of Lifeguard/Learn to Swim Teacher. The Lifeguard/Learn to Swim Teacher is a dual position responsible for both supervision to visitors using the pools, and also teaching Learn to Swim classes in an encouraging, safe and professional environment.

You will be a part of a wider swimming and recreation team within the Hamilton City Council's Community Services Unit. If you are customer-focused and keen to establish a successful career in the leisure industry we would love to hear from you.

Candidates need to be able to demonstrate the following:

  • An interest in enhancing the health and well-being of the community
  • A great can-do attitude to ensure you deliver excellent customer service
  • They can be a team player, someone who can roll up their sleeves and make things happen
  • In addition, you’ll need to be able to work as rostered any day Monday to Sunday at either Waterworld or Gallagher Aquatic Centre in Hamilton.

Desirable to have includes:

  • Have life guarding experience
  • Experienced in teaching swimming
  • Hold a current pool or beach lifeguard qualification
  • A first aid certificate

What happens next?

If you are short-listed we will contact you to arrange a practical assessment where you will be required to:

  • Swim 200m in less than six minutes
  • Complete a depth test – swim to the bottom of the dive pool (4.6) and collect an object
  • Shadow two 30-minute Learn to Swim classes

Candidates who successfully achieve the practical test will be invited to a formal interview with our hiring team.

This position is 32-40 hours per week as rostered Monday to Sunday. The starting range is $18.16 per hour, working up to $20 per hour.
