MOTAT is New Zealand’s largest transport and technology museum and is home to some of the world’s most unique examples of historical innovations in kiwi transport and technology.

The Museum is currently growing the Conservation Team and is looking for two full time permanent Conservation Technicians and one full time, 10-month fixed term Conservation Technician to join the team.

Reporting to the Conservation Manager, the Technician will work with the Conservation team to assess and carry out support programs and procedures for the long-term preservation of the Museum’s Collections, including environmental monitoring, IPM, object cleaning and treatment.

Key responsibilities in this role include:

  • Carrying out conservation and collection care programmes such as IPM, environmental monitoring, cleaning, etc.
  • Carrying out a rolling program of interventive treatments for collection items, under the supervision of a conservator.
  • Conducting routine checks of collection objects in exhibition and storage areas and creating reports and surveys as well as benchmarking data.
  • Participating in disaster planning plus carry out salvage of collections objects in the event of an emergency.

Ideal candidates for this role will have:

  • A relevant qualification in Conservation and two years’ experience working in a conservation setting.
  • Demonstrated experience carrying out IPM or environmental monitoring of collections.
  • Experience with carrying out interventive treatments on collection objects.
  • Experience with hazardous collections and emergency salvage of collections.
  • Awareness of museum standards and practices in line with ICOM & Museums Aotearoa’s Code of Ethics.
  • Excellent computer literacy and experience with all Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Current full driver’s license.
  • Experience and certification to operate a forklift, would be advantageous.
