Contract: Permanent full-time

Hours of work will be: 40 hours per week (Monday-Friday)

Location: SPCA New Lynn

Our ideal Scientific Officer will:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline, preferably at a post-graduate level. Ideally, with a PhD or MSc in animal welfare.
  • A proven interest in and knowledge of animal welfare and commitment to the mission of the SPCA.
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with a wide variety of individuals and organisations.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to work under pressure and the ability to plan and prioritise a varied workload and meet fixed deadlines.
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively and to react quickly to a range of different demands.
  • Well-developed research and analytical skills.
  • Experience of completing critical reviews of scientific literature, scientific reports, papers, letters and information sheets.
  • Working knowledge of statistics including experience of managing and analysing technical data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven ability to be able to communicate complex scientific information to a broad range of audiences.
  • Project management.
  • Computer literate with a familiarity with electronic database management.
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and to manage own time efficiently.
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a team with staff inside the Animal Welfare Science & Education Department and with professionals from other organizations.
