  • Cultivate effective relationships with churches at all levels
  • Speak 2-3 Weekend days/month deepening Tearfund's presence
  • Attract and coach volunteer leaders who mobilise others
The Organisation
Tearfund (https://www.tearfund.org.nz) is one of New Zealand’s leading NGO’s with development partnerships and programmes throughout the developing world.  It is a highly respected charity that inspires people to give, learn, advocate and stand up against injustice.

Over 20,000 donors and 1,000 churches nationwide provide most of the funding needed for Tearfund’s development programmes.

Tearfund has a challenging and diverse body of work, including child sponsorship, anti-trafficking and exploitation, disaster risk reduction, relief and recovery, and community development via enterprise, water, health and education.

Examples of Tearfund programmes well supported by New Zealanders are the Justice Conference first held in Auckland in 2016 and returning in November this year.  This is part of what has become the largest group of biblical and social justice conferences that are held annually in different countries.  Our key fundraising campaigns and activities include our successful child sponsorship programme, gift for life, emergency appeals, Poverty Cycle and Christmas campaigns.

The role
The Church Engagement Manager is an important role working directly with churches and other Christian organisations in the South Island. The focus is twofold, securing speaking and relational face-to-face opportunities in Churches, and building up a strong network of volunteers who represent the causes we work for in their church communities.

This is a new permanent part-time role.  It involves 3 days a week with two to three weekends a month taken up speaking on behalf of Tearfund in churches and at church conferences.

A key responsibility is to grow and develop volunteer leaders who champion and mobilise others to act against poverty and injustice.  It’s nothing less than helping create a people movement around Tearfund’s five responses of prayer, learning, giving, advocating change and making lifestyle changes, so making a difference in the lives of vulnerable people.  Inspiring others to support our causes to nourish communities with life’s essentials, protect the vulnerable from exploitation, restore hope and peace when disaster and conflict strikes, sponsoring children in need, and empowering people to help themselves.

The person will possess the presence, drive and speaking ability to engage with churches and develop mutually beneficial relationships with Tearfund.  This will involve listening, thinking creatively about how partnerships can be strengthened, promoting Tearfund’s products as appropriate and encouraging people and churches to become financial supporters of Tearfund justice and poverty initiatives.

What we seek in candidates

Candidates will have:
  • held church leadership roles and be able to build strong relationships with Christian leaders and volunteers
  • have existing networks among churches in the South Island
  • strong organisational, communication and people skills
  • sales or account management experience would be a distinct advantage

Tearfund’s Mission Statement is: “Motivated by Jesus, we encourage Kiwis to act for justice to relieve poverty among the world’s most vulnerable people”.   The ability to authentically engage with others around our mission is essential.

This is an opportunity to join a great team supporting life changing programmes.
