  • Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki
  • Youth Engagement Workers – Timaru
  • 6 months Fixed Term Contract

At Oranga Tamariki, we work with whānau and communities to help protect, support and care for children and young people. It's a challenging job, and we are passionate about it.

The Timaru site are making a commitment to supporting high needs young people placed in their youth  family home to ensure they; remain in our community, are connected to whanau, continue education, are active in their recreation interests and strengthen their cultural connections and understanding.

The role of the Youth Worker - Site is to help provide nurturing support to children and young people who are in our care. You will work with children and young people to provide a calming, nurturing and supportive influence in times of change. This additional support will assist the work social workers do and ensure we are putting the needs of the child or young person first. You will demonstrate appropriate models of behaviour, acknowledging the personal influence on the life of each child or young person, and that this interaction has a positive influence and brightens the outcome for those children and young people in our care.

This is an important role in working with and supporting at risk youth across the area.  Our vision is to support and empower young people to make positive changes so they can be embraced as full members of their whanau, schools and wider community.

What are we looking for?

You will have significant experience in working with disaffected and disengaged youth and their whanau. You will have great engagement skills, can overcome barriers to engagement and are comfortable working in difficult and challenging situations. You will have established relationships and networks across the area and a good knowledge of the key players to help you make a difference in the lives of youth.

You will have experience in social services, including working with at-risk children or youth; and/or a relevant qualification in youth work, sport and recreation, education, health, or psychology is preferred but not essential. Applicants with relevant and transferrable life skills are also encouraged to apply.

Given the challenges of working with youth, this is not a 9-5 role, which may include shift-work (weekends and public holidays).

Purpose of the Role

To work with the youth family home supervisor and the youth team in Timaru to deliver the organisation’s vision for youth particularly in the family home.

To manage the planning and delivery of tailored, wrap-around programmes for young people as determined through an assessment of their strengths, needs, risk areas and developmental opportunities.

To promote the personal, educational, recreational, creative and social development of youth, helping them reach their full potential
