 We have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Youth Coach to join us to support our Youth Justice Team and the running of our Supervision with Activity programme in Hillcrest, Hamilton.

Hillcrest Home is a facility providing residential programmes for up to eight high risk young male offenders.  We provide care for up to five young men aged 14-17 years while they complete their tailored individual programmes. Residents are supported to engage in a range of programmes including education, sports, music, psycho-education, vocational training and individual therapy.

The key responsibility of the Assistant Youth Coach is to coach tamariki through the structured programme designed to address offending behaviour. This role works as part of a wider team consisting of Oranga Tamariki staff, clinical advisors, cultural advisors and professionals with specialist skills, such as drug and alcohol counsellors, psychologists, mental health providers. 

This is a unique opportunity where you will be instrumental in helping young people learn and grow as you take part in recreational activities and implement programmes to ensure positive and focussed behaviours are improved. All youth coaches and tamariki on the programme learn to play musical instruments, attend the gym, cook and engage in outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking and horse riding.

This is an ideal role for recent graduates in fields of psychology, social work, education or sports and fitness who are looking to gain a vast amount of experience engaging with youth and the community.

The ideal person will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Empathetic towards young people who have experienced adversity in their lives
  • Have the ability to take things in their stride while having a positive outlook
  • Experienced and confident with teenagers
  • An interest in sports and a reasonable level of fitness
  • Knowledge in tikanga Maori
  • Experience with one or more musical instruments
  • Comfortable working with young people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Great communication skills and the ability to resonate with our young people
  • New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident at the time of application as this is a Level 4/5 ANZSCO position.
  • Team player who is committed to work within professional boundaries.

You will need a full clean driver's licence for this role and ideally be able to drive both manual and automatic vehicles.
