Do you like working with young people and making a difference in their lives?  Work with like-minded people on one of New Zealand’s iconic sailing vessels that delivers a world renowned Youth Development Programme.

The Spirit of Adventure Trust requires a full time Cook for our 45 metre Barquentine sailing vessel, the Spirit of New Zealand.

As Cook on board you will be responsible for the nourishment, preparation and delivery of all meals and the food provisioning needs of the ship’s company of 54 people in total. The providing of meals will include meeting dietary requirements such as vegetarian and dairy or gluten free. You will also manage the organisation of the galley and meal routines working with the other crew to assist with the operation of the vessel and delivery of the voyage program. 

The role is physically demanding and you must be a self-starter and proactive. With two full time crews the sailing roster is based on a 10 days on and 10 days off rotation. The ships home port is Auckland. Travel requirements to and from your home when we are not operating from Auckland are covered by the Trust. The Hauraki Gulf is our cruising ground but we regularly operate from other ports around the coast of New Zealand all year round.

You will need to pass a Police Vet check and the ship is a smoke free environment

Prior experience in catering for large numbers is required with relevant qualifications preferred.  

An enthusiasm for creating great food in a small and sometimes rolling galley while surrounded by and working with forty teenagers is essential.
