We are looking for a Portfolio Manager to establish, embed and run our newly established Portfolio Office within Fire and Emergency.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is a Crown Entity established on 1 July 2017 under the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act 2017. The role of our new organisation is to reduce unwanted fires, respond to structural and vegetation fires and other emergencies including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, hazardous substance related incidents, natural disasters and support increased community resilience.

Our new, unified organisation provides a fire and emergency service that delivers for communities, and the firefighters who serve them, now and in the future.

The Portfolio Office is responsible for providing structure, leadership, information, advice and support on investment decisions across the portfolio. The office ensures all investments in the portfolio are contributing to, and delivering against, strategic priorities.

The Portfolio Manager will manage the investment portfolio processes and be expected to provide strategic challenge, overview, and scrutiny to support the Investment Committee in its decision-making. The Portfolio Manager will need to be an experienced leader with well-developed portfolio management and strategy/business-planning skills. They will need to understand the strategic direction and intent of the organisation, and be able to influence, develop and maintain effective working relationships with senior leaders, managers, project sponsors, and other supporting functions across the organisation.

The purpose of this position is to:

  • Develop the portfolio strategy for approval by the Fire and Emergency Investment Committee
  • Ensure that the initiatives proposed in the portfolio will deliver Fire and Emergency's strategic priorities
  • Ensure the overall portfolio is effectively planned and managed according to the agreed metrics
  • Maintain strategic oversight of the investment portfolio and provides strategic oversight support for the Fire and Emergency Investment Committee and any sub-portfolio committees

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • At least three to five years senior leadership portfolio management experience in a large organisation that has required the ability to influence and or inform leaders at all levels of the organisation
  • A proven ability to provide high quality and succinct intelligence and advice to governance groups and senior leaders
  • A proven change management and leadership experience particularly in identifying, planning and navigating whole of organisation change impacts
  • A proven ability to develop trust, credibility and collaborative relationships with senior leaders, peers and staff, and demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to successfully negotiate and influence others to achieve shared outcomes
  • A proven ability to think strategically, conceptually and laterally, to develop frameworks, and operate organisation-wide systems and processes
  • Formal portfolio management qualifications or equivalent experience

This is a fixed term position for 18 months. The remuneration range for this position is $ 150,427 to $176,974. Benefits include matched KiwiSaver employer contributions of up to 6%, life and income protection insurance for KiwiSaver contributors, and unlimited fair use sick leave policy.
